Water is not only the world’s
most damaging contaminant, but it can make life very uncomfortable if
water vapour seeps through a textile!
Versaperm Limited, a world technology leader, has launched a new instrument
that can measure the water vapour permeability of anything from a sports
jacket through to a textile medical protection cover, or from rubber and
PUR-foils through to the gas permeability of a tissue.
The new WVTR (Water Vapour Transmission Rate) meter is versatile, fast,
reliable, gives highly reproducible results and can be used to test virtually
all packaging types. It allows the temperature and humidity of the sample
to be accurately controlled. As well as the selling the instrument, the
company offers a comprehensive laboratory-based permeability testing service.
The MK VI meter’s highly automated computerised control can cope
with several samples at a time - and still give a reading in as little
as 30 minutes for some materials. The conventionally gravimetric measurement
technique takes several days and gives significantly less accurate and
reproducible results.
The instrument needs, at most, minimal re-calibration and is extremely
simple to use, but gives results that can be accurate to better than one
part per million (with some samples a few parts per hundred million).
Sensitivities are typically in the range 0.05 - 3200g/m2/day.
A wide variety of options is
available, depending on the specific applications, either single or multi-sample
systems, plus a range of measurement chambers and sensors can be supplied
for testing samples from the size of a thimble up to a pallet load and
beyond.
